I didn’t come to Khokand for contracts.
I came because the baby hats I make in Yunnan sold 37 units to a local buyer on Alibaba last October.
That was enough to make me think: maybe there’s a market here.
Three months in. I’ve forgotten to pay rent twice. My landlord doesn’t yell. He just leaves a note: “Next week, please.”
I’m 24. I speak German. I don’t speak Uzbek. Or Russian.
I thought English would be enough.
It wasn’t.
The contract that took 17 days
I needed a simple distribution agreement.
Not a fancy one. Just something to show my supplier in Tashkent that I wasn’t just some guy on Instagram buying hats from him.
I found a local “legal assistant” through a Chinese group chat.
He said he’d handle everything. “Easy,” he said. “Two weeks.”
Two weeks became 17.
He asked for my ID, my company registration number (which I didn’t have yet), and a copy of my passport.
I sent everything.
Then silence.
I called. He said, “The notary is on holiday.”
Then: “The city office is closed for system update.”
Then: “We need your signature in person. But you must go to the district office. Not the city one.”
I went.
The office was a small room with three desks. One clerk. No English signs.
I showed him the draft. He looked at it for five minutes.
Then he said: “This is not standard. You need to use the state template.”
I didn’t know there was a state template.
He handed me a 12-page PDF in Cyrillic.
No English. No headings. Just text.
I asked if he could explain it.
He shrugged. “You can ask a lawyer.”
I asked where.
He pointed outside. “There’s one near the mosque. He speaks Chinese.”
I didn’t go.
I was tired. And I was afraid of spending more money.
What I learned (the hard way)
I thought “service好不好” meant quality of writing.

Three things I’d do differently
- Ask for the official template first — Before hiring anyone, go to the local Chamber of Commerce or Ministry of Justice website (if you can find it). Ask: “What is the standard contract template for distribution agreements?”
- Bring a translator who speaks Uzbek and Russian — Not just English. Most clerks don’t speak English. Most lawyers do speak Russian.
- Go in person, with a local friend — Even if you pay them 20,000 soums (about $1.50), having someone who knows the system helps. I met a guy from Xi’an who does this for Chinese traders. He’s not a lawyer. He just knows where to go.

A: It depends. Some local suppliers accept signed PDFs. Others require notarization.

- Path: Ask at the city hall or local Chinese business group.

I still don’t know if my contract is “good.”
But I know this:
I didn’t lose money.
I didn’t get scammed.
I didn’t give up.
I just showed up.
Again.
And again.
I’m not proud of how long it took.
But I’m proud I didn’t quit.
